The Hoan Kiem District in the Vietnamese capital city of Hanoi announced launch of a new plastic waste recycling program, which aims to collect at least 100 kilograms of trash every week. The waste recycling program will be implemented as a team effort, with collaboration from local authorities, environmental workers, scrap collectors and the civilian population belonging to the district. The program will run in residential areas and at schools. Initially, six wards have been selected for the program-Hang Dao, Hang Buom, Hang Bac, Hang Trong, Cua Dong and Phuc Tan. The recycling program targets to ensure collection of at least 100 kilograms of low-value plastic waste such as plastic bags, cups, containers, spoons and straws every week. The residents will have to hand over clean and dry plastic bags to environmental workers or scrap collectors who will be responsible for collection of plastic waste. The collected bags will be transported from collection points to the VietCycle company, where they will be responsibly recycled. The program, which will run through end-July, will promote a better culture of collecting and sorting waste. It must be noted that the district had run a similar 4-month trial program from March last year.
