This year\u2019s theme, \u201ctowards zero waste in fashion and textiles\u201d, highlights the vital role of the fast-growing fashion and textiles sector in countering the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/topics\/chemicals-and-pollution-action\/waste\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">waste pollution crisis<\/a>\u00a0gripping the planet.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Advocates say the industry could embody the zero-waste agenda by bolstering waste management globally, reducing waste generation, and promoting sustainable consumption and production patterns.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Humanity generates up to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/resources\/global-waste-management-outlook-2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2.3 billion tonnes<\/a>\u00a0of municipal solid waste annually, a tally that includes everything from food to electronics to textiles. Every year,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/globalfashionagenda.org\/pulse-of-the-industry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">92 million tonnes<\/a>\u00a0of textile waste is produced globally, found The Global Fashion Agenda. This is the equivalent of a garbage truck full of clothing being incinerated or sent to a landfill every second.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ellenmacarthurfoundation.org\/a-new-textiles-economy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Between 2000 and 2015<\/a>, clothing production doubled while the duration of garment use decreased 36 per cent, found the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3840\" src=\"https:\/\/nhanvan.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/thoi-trang-300x196.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"943\" height=\"616\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nhanvan.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/thoi-trang-300x196.jpg 300w, https:\/\/nhanvan.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/thoi-trang-1024x669.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/nhanvan.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/thoi-trang-768x502.jpg 768w, https:\/\/nhanvan.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/thoi-trang-1536x1004.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/nhanvan.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/thoi-trang.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 943px) 100vw, 943px\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The fashion and textiles sector accounts for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/resources\/publication\/sustainability-and-circularity-textile-value-chain-global-roadmap\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2\u20138 per cent<\/a>\u00a0of global greenhouse gas emissions and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/resources\/publication\/catalysing-science-based-policy-action-sustainable-consumption-and-production\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">9 per cent<\/a>\u00a0of microplastic pollution reaching the oceans annually. It also consumes\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/quantis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/measuringfashion_globalimpactstudy_full-report_quantis_cwf_2018a.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">215 trillion liters<\/a>\u00a0of water\u2014equivalent to 86 million Olympic-sized swimming pools. An estimated\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s11367-018-1537-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">15,000 chemicals<\/a> are used in the textile manufacturing process, and some of these substances accumulate in the environment for decades.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"field_body\">\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--content paragraph--view-mode--default\">\n<div class=\"para_content_text\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cThe fashion and textile sector is fueling mass overconsumption and waste pollution. And as the industry continues to rapidly grow, so will its environmental impact, unless a shift towards circularity and sustainable production and consumption is taken by all actors,\u201d said Jacqueline Alvarez, the Chief of UNEP\u2019s Chemicals and Health Branch. \u201cThe International Day of Zero Waste 2025 will promote a more circular sector and the recognition of textile waste as a valuable resource.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Zero-Waste Day will be observed through events and activities held worldwide, aiming to raise awareness of national, subnational, regional, and local zero-waste initiatives and their contributions to achieving sustainable development. UNEP and UN-Habitat invite partners and stakeholders to register their events and activities using this\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apps.unep.org\/formtools\/modules\/form_builder\/published\/idzw2025.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">registration link<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cAchieving zero waste in fashion and textiles cannot be an isolated effort,\u201d added Alvarez. \u201cIt requires determined action from all stakeholders, with benefits for all. This day aims to raise awareness about the critical role of waste management and responsible consumption and production in achieving sustainable development. It calls on individuals and organizations to adopt a life-cycle approach, focusing on reducing resource use and environmental emissions at every stage of a product&#8217;s life cycle.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/beatpollution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>#BeatPollution<\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/beatpollution\/waste\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>#BeatWastePollution<\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0aim to build and nurture a larger narrative on a pollution-free planet that weaves interrelated aspects of climate and nature and connects different forms of pollution to the larger issue of pollution and waste.
